ODESSA, TX – The Wichita Falls Warriors (11-8-1-3) were looking to sweep the Odessa Jackalopes (7-15-2-1) on Saturday night to conclude the weekend road series.
The Warriors have won four straight games going back to Monday, January 18 at Shreveport when they topped the Mudbugs 3-2 in overtime. The Warriors would begin the first period with a turnover that led to a scoring chance for the Jackalopes, but Warriors goaltender Owen Bartoszkiewicz, who was coming off back to back shutouts made a big save early to keep the game scoreless. It would be the Warriors who would find the back of the net first like they did on Friday night. Defenseman Drake Usher (6) picked up the rimming puck on the weak near side boards and sent the puck towards the front of the net, where forward Joseph Harguindeguy (10) would tip it up and over Jackalopes goaltender Connor Hasley to put Wichita Falls up 1-0 in the first. The Warriors had two power plays in the opening frame but were unable to add to the one goal lead and would take the 1-0 advantage to the second period. Wichita Falls outshot Odessa 10-7 in the first period.
Quickly into the second period it was the Jackalpoes who would answer with the tying goal off the stick of Jack Musa (1) who was all alone in front of the Warriors net just 1:34 into the period. The game did not remain tied for long. The Warriors would respond immediately with a goal of their own 26 seconds later to take the lead back. This time it was Cade Lemmer (1) in just his second game as a Warrior would get the feed off of the turnover forced by Hunter Jones (10) and put the puck in the back of the net. The Jackalopes would have an odd man rush on a 3-on-1 where Evan Orr would send a one-timer on net but Bartoszkiewicz would spread out across the crease and make a big save to preserve the one goal lead for Wichita Falls. Then, the other newest Warrior, defenseman Dawson Klein would then blast one from the point through the traffic for his first as a Warrior and second of the season to extend the lead to 3-1 late in the second period. The Warriors were outshot 16-9 by Odessa in the second period but would take a two goal advantage to the final frame.
In the third period the Warriors would control the puck and hold the two goal lead past the midway point. Then forward Ryan Robinson would take over the show. Robinson (7,8) would net back to back goals at 11:33 and 14:13 into the third period to extend the Warriors lead to 5-1 late in the third on the way to their fifth straight win. Joseph Harguindeguy (7,8) would finish the game with two assists to go along with his goal in the first period to help lead the Warriors to a 5-1 victory and a weekend sweep on the road over the Jackalopes. The win makes it five straight for Wichita Falls, meanwhile the loss makes it 10 straight for Odessa.
Owen Bartoszkiewicz (10-5-1-2) recorded his fifth straight win for Wichita Falls. He recorded 31 saves on 32 shots faced. Connor Hasley (6-9-2-1) recorded the loss for Odessa. He recorded 27 saves on 32 shots faced.
Next up, the Warriors return home on Friday, February 5 on First Responders Night to host the Lone Star Brahmas. Puck drop is at 7:05 PM at the Kay Yeager Coliseum.
